The PHA recognizes the importance of encouraging students to pursue a career that leads to economic independence and self sufficiency. As a result, several scholarship opportunities are available each year to Section 8 and Public Housing residents. The eligibility requirements and application process are different for each scholarship program. Scholarship opportunities will be posted on the Public Notices page of our website when they become available.
George and Nancy Latimer Public Housing Resident Scholarship Awards
One PHA resident has been awarded a scholarship of $1,000 through the PHA’s George and Nancy Latimer Public Housing Resident Scholarship Program. The scholarship helps pay tuition and other school costs for PHA-owned housing residents and Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) participants who are pursuing post-secondary education. The scholarship award has been sent directly to the recipients' educational institution.
This scholarship is in its 29th year. The scholarship is paid from the Building Fund, not from the PHA’s HUD funding. As of 2024, the PHA has awarded 147 scholarships totaling $125,500.
PHADA Scholarship
The Public Housing Authorities Directors Association (PHADA) scholarship programs encourage academic excellence and community responsibility among high school students. Each year PHADA awards three scholarships to deserving youth currently residing in a PHADA member agency.
Minnesota NAHRO Education Scholarship Program
Each year at their Spring Conference, the Minnesota Chapter of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) awards scholarships for post-secondary educational programs. Scholarships are awarded to student applicants who are sponsored by active Minnesota NAHRO Agency Members and selected as winners. The number of scholarships awarded is dependent upon the number of applications received and the amount of scholarship funds raised by Minnesota NAHRO. Each agency member may sponsor only one applicant. Scholarships may be used for any accredited post-secondary education program, except for graduate or post-graduate programs.
